WHAT?

It is a Not-for Profit self-sustaining Mixed-Use complex providing a work/live facility for professional musicians, designers, dancers, actors, painters, innovators and others in the creative class.

In addition to residential units, functional areas would also include complementary; studio work space; exhibition and rehearsal space; common resource centre and administration space; common recreation and social areas; storage etc.. The entire concept is essentially geared to the needs of the creative worker while the public may also participate. Not a public art gallery or a performing arts centre, it is a place that supports creative exploration.  The hope is that it will in the long run help to attract artists and all creative workers to the City of Greater Sudbury as members of its creative economy.

Sudbury Arts Council has formed a standing committee to investigate the feasibility of adaptive reuse of the Wembley Public School.

Members include: Chair Paddy O’Sullivan (Visual Artist, vice-president of Sudbury Arts Council)

Nick Ross (Musician)- Vice Chair

Frank Chartanad (Graphic Designer)

Austin Davey (Accountant)

Gordon Drysdale (Visual Artist)

Vicki Gihula (President of Sudbury Arts Council)

John Hamalainen (Engineer)

Gord Harris  (former president, Sudbury Arts Council)

John Lindsay (former president, Sudbury Arts Council ex officio)

Paul Reid (Economic Advisor for the City of Greater Sudbury)

Oryst Sawchuck (Architect and artist)

WHERE?

Wembley School Site is on the Junction Creek Waterway Park within a half mile by walking or biking trail along Junction Creek of downtown. The site area approximates that of Memorial Park and fronts on Wembley Drive

WHY?

The Sudbury Arts Council recognizes the need for an expanded creative economy as key to improving the City’s quality of life. “ArtsJunction” is an initiative to provide affordable accommodation for workers in the creative economy and thereby contributing to the community’s creative workforce. SAC also recognizes that by adaptive reuse of Wembley Public School, after it has served its purpose as a school, preserves its heritage value.
